All Adobe programs comes with a very annoyinginteresting piece of software, the Adobe Application Manager. Just like Java or Windows, every 5 minutes, it notifies you about an update you can’t miss.

Adobe Application Manager is an adware AAM patch application: Collection of fixes and patches for errors applicable to various Adobe applications including Flash, Acrobat, Photoshop and Lightroom. The download is available as an EXE file and the latest version is 10.0. Download CS, Acrobat DC, Photoshop Elements, Premiere Elements product installers. Since not everybody is a really fan of these kind of programs, i’ll show here two ways of disabling Adobe Application Manager (AAM).

Depending on the version of your Adobe Software, one of those ways might not be available… don’t worry. It will be alright. You don’t have to do both, just one will do.

Method 01: Disabling AAM service.

  1. Open Windows Services
    a) Use the shortcut windows + r
    b) Type services.msc and click OK
  2. Look for a service called “Adobe Application Manager Updater” (the word Updater might not be present)
    a) Right click the service
    b) Select Properties option
    c) In Startup type, select the option Disable
    d) Click on Stop button. (If it’s disabled, dont worry)
    e) Click on Apply and then on OK
  3. Enjoy the absence of AAM.

Method 02: Disable AAM scheduled task

  1. Open Windows Task Scheduler
    a) Use the shortcut windows + r
    b) Type services.msc and click ok
  2. Look for a service called “Adobe Application Manager Updater” (the word Updater might not be present)
    a) Right click the task
    b) Select Disable option
  3. Enjoy the absence of AAM.

Issue: 'Adobe Application Manager is needed' error

One of the following error messages occurs when you launch or use a Creative Suite 5 or CS5.5 product:

  • Adobe Application Manager is needed to update your product.
  • Adobe Application Manager is needed to start your trial.

The AAM patch installs the correct version of the Adobe Application Manager. Select the patch from your operating system below:

1. Determine whether short filenames are causing the problem.

  1. Launch a command prompt with administrator privileges.
    • Windows XP: Click Start > Run, type cmd, and press Enter.
    • Windows Vista/7: Click Start, type cmd in the Search field, and press Enter.
  2. Type fsutil behavior query disable8dot3 and press Enter.
    • If the output of the command is 1, then proceed to Manually create short file paths.
    • Otherwise, proceed to Install the Creative Suite 5 or CS5.5 product silently.

Important: Substitute <user_name> with your user name.

  1. Log out of your current user account and log in to another Administrative account.
  2. Launch an administrative command prompt.
    • Windows XP: Click Start > Run, type cmd, and press Shift + Enter.
    • Windows Vista/7: Click Start, type cmd in the Search field, and press Shift + Enter.
    1. Type fsutil file setshortname 'c:Documents and Settings<user_name>Local Settings' local~1 and press Enter.
    2. Type fsutil file setshortname 'c:Documents and Settings<user_name>Local SettingsApplication Data' applic~1 and press Enter.
    1. Type fsutil behavior set disable8dot3 2 and press Enter.
    2. Type fsutil file setshortname 'C:Users<user_name>' user~1 and press Enter.
  4. Log off from the current user and log in to your original user.

3. Install the Creative Suite 5 or CS5.5 product silently

  1. Using a command prompt, navigate to the folder containing the Set-up.exe file.
  2. Open a command prompt with administrative privileges, or enter the command into the run/command line field within your deployment technology.
