PULSE SECURE FOR ANDROID – APP DESCRIPTION Pulse Secure for Android makes it a snap to use your personal device for work. It’s an all-in-one client that securely connects your device to work and provides a Workspace to do your job. With Pulse Secure for Android you can connect to your corporate VPN with just the touch of a button. That gives you easy and secure mobile access to information. Pulse will download and install the upgraded version, restart, and you will be reconnected to the remote access - VPN. When you are finished using the remote access - VPN, disconnect from it.

I am tired of walking people through the billion steps you need to take in order to configure your WEB BROWSER to be able to download the INSTALLER file for the VPN to connect to the Stony Brook Network. It shouldn’t be that difficult to download a software installer. Unfortunately, the installer files are not available otherwise.

The Division of Information Technology has made the installer files available:

DoIT’s Data Network Services team released new VPN client programs for the Mac OS X, Windows 32-bit, and Windows 64-bit operating systems in response to problems users were experiencing connecting to Stony Brook’s Work-at-Home Virtual Private Network (VPN) from off-campus.

The current Juniper product that Stony Brook utilizes for its VPN services uses Java to download the application to your computer. Java is then used to see if your computer has the latest code. A problem has been identified, especially with Mac OS X systems, where if the application needs to be updated, it does not update, the program fails, and the user receives an error message. Since the auto-update in the program is not working, users are encouraged to download and install one of the following clients manually and then try re-connecting to the VPN.

These downloads are not hosted on Stony Brook University’s campus. I have confirmed that the downloads will install Juniper Network connect and allow you to connect to the Stony Brook University Campus.

Windows 7 32-bit:

Windows 7 64-bit and all Windows 8:

Mac OSX:

Linux:
http://helpdesk.cwsl.edu/Software/JuniperVPN/Linux/ncui-8.0R1.1.i386.rpm

When the install completes, you should be able to load the program from START – ALL PROGRAMS – JUNIPER NETWORKS – NETWORK CONNECT. In the server address, type in https://sslj.wah.stonybrook.edu and connect. You will then be prompted for your NetID and password.

Installation Issues

How do I upgrade or install the client?

You will need administrative permissions to your computer. Contact your Local IT Support Provider if you do not have administrative access to your computer.

  1. Using add/remove programs on your OS, uninstall all instances of Juniper/Pulse Secure clients (Network Connect / Junos Pulse / Pulse Secure).
  2. Download the correct client from Pulse Secure download page.
  3. Once the client has finished installing, reboot the machine.
  4. After the machine has booted back up, follow the appropriate setup instructions and attempt to connect.
    • For Windows, see here.
    • For Mac, see here.

I tried to install the client but received an access or privilege error.

Initial installation must be performed by someone with administrative privileges on the machine. If you do not have administrative access to your computer, consult your Local IT Support Provider.

macOS stand-alone client installation fails with 'Unidentified Developer' error.

This issue is caused by Pulse Secure Client installer certificates not being recognized by Finder. This issue has been solved in Pulse Secure 5.1R5.1 for macOS. Go to the download page to download and install the recent client.

On a Mac platform, I am unable to upgrade to Pulse Secure (or unable to upgrade from Network Connect to Pulse, or connect after upgrade).

!!! This solution should be executed ONLY by computer support staff (LSP's, LAN Admins) who are familiar with the OSX command line. Errors on the command line can severly disrupt your system. !!!

  1. Open the command line / command prompt and execute the following commands:
    sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Application Support/Juniper Networks/SetupClient
    sudo rm -rf ~/Library/Application Support/Juniper
  2. If you see the following files, try removing them:
    ~/Library/Application Support/Juniper Networks/tncc.jar
    ~/Library/Application Support/Juniper Networks
    ~/Library/Logs/Juniper Networks
  3. Ensure Java plug in is enabled on the Mac.
  4. After all the above steps are complete, reboot the Mac, install the client, and attempt to connect.

Connection Issues

I can't connect to VPN - it does not give me a login prompt, login prompt loops, or I have intermittent connection issues.

  • Make sure that VU user is connecting to vpn.vanderbilt.edu.
  • Verify that the most current Pulse Secure client is installed. If not, follow the directions here to remove the old client and install the most recent version.
  • Verify the operating system version and ensure the correct client was installed. 32-bit client will only operate on 32-bit machines, and 64-bit client will only operate on 64-bit machines.

My connection drops within a few minutes of connecting.

Verify that the most current Pulse Secure client is installed. If not, follow the directions here to remove the old client and install the most recent version.

My connection speed is very slow while operating on the client.

Reboot your computer. Upon reboot, do not start the SSL VPN Client. Go to the following URL http://vanderbilt.speedtestcustom.com and run a speed test. Once complete, enable the SSL VPN Client and rerun the speed test. Once complete, compare the results.

I received the following error: 'Max number of sessions active.'

Verify that the most current Pulse Secure client is installed. If not, follow the directions here to remove the old client and install the most recent version.

I received the following:

ERROR: Exceeded maximum users for this authentication realm.

Verify the connection URL in your Pulse Secure client is set for 'vpn.vanderbilt.edu'. The following URLs are no longer supported and need to be removed: vpn.ea.vanderbilt.edu and vpn.mc.vanderbilt.edu. If the connection URL is different, please do the following:

  1. Delete the connection by highlighting it on the Pulse Secure Client and clicking the 'X' in the top right corner.
  2. Create a new connection by clicking the '+' in the top right corner.
  3. Fill in the 'name' field with 'Enterprise SSL VPN', and the URL with 'vpn.vanderbilt.edu'.
  4. Click the 'Add' button, highlight the new connection, and click Connect.

On a Mac, the SSL VPN Client will work sporadically.
